We're Obsessed With T-Shirt Yarn (And Here's Why You Will Be Too)

Hi, I'm Adie at Over the Hook and I wanted to introduce our new line Yarnly T-Shirt yarn.

If you haven't come across it before, Yarnly T-shirt yarn (sometimes called zpagetti or fabric yarn) is made from recycled jersey fabric — the same stuff your favourite tees are made from. It's thick, soft, and an absolute dream to work with. No fiddly stitches, no squinting at tiny needles. Just big, bold, satisfying makes.

What Did I Make? A Plant Pot Cover!

I'll be honest — I wasn't sure what to make first. I knew I had to make something up in it to showcase our new line, so I grabbed 2 balls of Yarnly T-shirt yarn and got crocheting. A few hours later? Absolute transformation. It's chunky, it's textured, and it makes my desk look like something out of a lifestyle magazine, well maybe not but it looks good!

It worked up so quickly — that's the magic of T-shirt yarn. You can have a finished project in an afternoon, which is very satisfying for those of us who have a habit of starting things and... well, you know.

Clare's Campervan Rug 🚐

Our very own Clare is currently mid-project on something brilliant — a rug for her campervan. She picked up some lovely vintage colours, and honestly, it's going to be stunning. T-shirt yarn is perfect for rugs because it's durable, easy to clean, and comes in so many gorgeous colours. Clare's going for a vintage boho vibe and we are absolutely here for it. We'll share photos when it's done!

What Else Can You Make With T-Shirt Yarn?

The possibilities are genuinely endless. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • 🧵 Baskets & storage pots — perfect for the home, and they actually hold their shape
  • 👜 Bags & totes — sturdy, stylish, and totally unique
  • 🪢 Macramé projects — wall hangings, plant hangers, you name it
  • 🏠 Mats & rugs — like Clare's campervan beauty in progress
  • 🌿 Plant pot covers — as proven by yours truly

It works brilliantly with a large crochet hook (we'd suggest a 10mm–15mm) or you can even finger knit or arm knit with it for super chunky results.

Come and Have a Look

Nikki's Stunning T-Shirt Yarn Bag 👜

We just had to share this one — Nikki, one of our lovely regulars from the Friday Knit and Natter group, has completely blown us away. She designed and made the most beautiful bag using our Yarnly T-shirt yarn, entirely from scratch. Her own design, her own vision, and honestly? It looks incredible.

This is exactly what we love about our Knit and Natter community — the creativity and talent in that room every Friday never ceases to amaze us. Nikki's bag is proof that with the right yarn and a bit of imagination, you can make something truly special.

We loved it so much that we asked Nikki if she'd make one especially for the shop — and she said yes. That beautiful blue bag has been on display here at Over The Hook and has been stopping people in their tracks ever since.

And now? Nikki has done it again. She's finished a brand new bag — made especially for us — and it is now proudly on display here at Over The Hook. We are absolutely delighted with it. Come in and see it for yourself, because it really does need to be seen in person.

Nikki, you are a star. 🌟

If her work has inspired you to have a go yourself, we've got plenty of Yarnly T-shirt yarn in store in a wonderful range of colours — pop in and have a feel. Who knows, you might be our next featured maker! 🧶
