Rosina Plane's Flora's Fauna — A Beginner-Friendly Mosaic Crochet Pattern

Rosina Plane's Flora's Fauna — A Beginner-Friendly Mosaic Crochet Pattern

Right, so you know I started another project. Surprise surprise.

In between opening up the shop, sorting deliveries, helping customers find the perfect yarn, and generally keeping everything ticking over here at Over the Hook, I've been quietly crocheting away on Flora's Fauna by Rosina Plane in Stylecraft Special DK — and honestly, it's the best decision I've made in a while.

I grab a few rows here, a few rows there. Someone comes in for some Stylecraft, I put it down. They leave happy, I pick it back up. It's become a bit of a running joke with the regulars. But you know what? It's coming along beautifully, and I am absolutely hooked (pun very much intended).

So What Is Flora's Fauna?

Flora's Fauna is a crochet blanket pattern by the brilliant Rosina Plane, and it uses a technique called overlay mosaic crochet. The design celebrates woodland flora and fauna — think leaves, flowers, little creatures — all worked in that gorgeous graphic mosaic style.

It was originally released as an 8-part Crochet Along (CAL) back in June 2022, but it's now available as one complete pattern file, which makes it so much easier to work through at your own pace. Perfect for someone like me who's fitting it in between customers!

And the finishing? An envelope border that neatly hides all your loose ends. I love an envelope border. Genuinely. Tidy finish, no faff — what's not to love?

Is It Hard?

I know mosaic crochet can look a bit intimidating, but honestly — don't let it put you off. Flora's Fauna is designed with beginners to mosaic crochet in mind, and Rosina has done a brilliant job of holding your hand through it. You get:

  • Full written instructions (clear and easy to follow)
  • Helpful photos throughout the pattern
  • Supporting videos for each part on Rosina Plane's YouTube channel

I've been following along with the videos on my lunch break. Very helpful, highly recommend.

A Few More Details

The pattern is written in 'Universal' terms, so if you've worked on any of Rosina's other designs — like the Jacquard Temperature Blanket — you'll feel right at home. It can also be combined with other mosaic crochet designs if you want to go bigger and bolder.

We also have colour packs available in different sizes, so you can grab everything you need to match my colourway. Come in and have a look — I'll show you where I'm up to on mine!

Our Colourway — Chosen by Adie & David

Now, one of the questions I keep getting asked in the shop is: "What colours are you using, Adie?" So let me tell you all about it!

David and I spent a very enjoyable (and slightly indecisive) afternoon going through the Stylecraft Special DK range together, and we landed on what I think is an absolutely gorgeous autumnal palette:

  • 🤎 Dark Brown — the rich, grounding base that ties everything together
  • Mocha — a warm, earthy mid-tone that softens the contrast beautifully
  • 🌟 Gold — a touch of warmth and brightness, like autumn sunlight through the trees
  • 🍂 Copper — that gorgeous rusty warmth that just screams cosy season
  • 🍇 Burgundy — deep, rich, and just a little bit dramatic. Love it.

Together they give the blanket this wonderful woodland, autumnal feel that suits the Flora's Fauna design perfectly. It was David's idea to add the Burgundy and honestly? He was absolutely right. I wasn't sure at first, but the moment we laid them all out together it just clicked.

If you'd like to recreate our colourway, all five shades are available in store and online in Stylecraft Special DK. Pop in and we can help you work out how many balls you'll need for your size.
